Petersen Farms, also known as Anoka Independent Grain & Feed, is one of the oldest family-operated businesses in the Anoka region.
The farm's origins can be traced back to 1948 when Ernest Petersen established it with a primary focus on feed and grain production. Initially operating a modest elevator, the farm expanded to include silos, giving way to metal grain bins in the 1960s. The mill's primary output consisted of animal feed for agricultural purposes and produced pet food products.
As Anoka County transformed from farmland to suburban developments, Anoka Independent Feed and Grain adapted by shifting its focus from traditional animal feed to specialized products, catering to hobby farms, pet food, and wild bird food.
Three generations of the Petersen family have overseen the farm's operations, with numerous family members contributing to its success. The family has cherished the time spent hunting on the property and appreciating the tranquillity of the surrounding natural environment.
Now a prominent fixture in downtown Anoka, Anoka Independent Grain and Feed has remained a family-owned business for over seven decades, providing essential services to the community since its inception in 1948. Under the leadership of Kevin Petersen, the team offers an extensive range of feed products for a diverse array of animals, including wild birds, horses, dogs, cats, poultry, exotic species, and deer.
